Some frequently asked questions…

  1. What is the Hammer and Sky Artist Residency program?

    The residency is a self-directed program that is open to artists at any stage of their career, from emerging to established.

  2. How do I apply for the residency program?

    Refer to “The Residency” page for a complete list of requirements. In a nutshell, you contact us for availability, then submit these 3 items when you apply: (1) Artist CV (2) Statement of intent (3) Images of your work.

  3. Are there any age restrictions for applying to the Hammer and Sky Artist Residency program?

    Yes, artists and companions must be at least 21 yrs old.

  4. Is there Internet available?

    Yes, Internet is available in all spaces except the private studios,

  5. What is the duration of the residency program?

    Two weeks, from Sunday 3 pm to Saturday 11 am.

  6. What is the deadline for submitting an application?

    Ongoing, on a first come, first served basis. We recommend that you apply early in the year to secure the best time period. We start to take applications in January of each year for the upcoming year.

  7. How many artists can the residency accommodate at one time?

    There are three residency units available in every two week block, each unit can accommodate one artist and one companion (extra charges may apply for your companion).

  8. Can I bring a partner or friend?

    Yes, extra charges may apply for your companion.

  9. Do the sleeping quarters have lockable rooms with private bathrooms?

    Yes all 3 units can be locked and have full private bathrooms.

  10. Are any accommodations shared?

    Yes, the Buckman House is a 2 bedroom house with lockable rooms and full private bathrooms.

  11. Are pets allowed?

    No.

  12. What types of artistic disciplines are accepted for the residency program?

    The residency is well equipped for visual artists, writers and musicians. If your discipline is outside of these domains, contact us to see if we can accommodate you.

  13. What kind of workspace is provided to the artists during the residency?

    There are 3 private studios on the church property and the church is a common space that can be used for meeting, studio, performance or chilling space. The church has a printing press and a performance stage with a PA system.

  14. Can anyone use the printing press?

    Artists must have experience in print making to use the printing press and must supply their own materials.

  15. Are there any fees associated with the residency program?

    The residency fee is $CAD 500 per week between May and October. The residency fee is lower during the winter months (depending on length of stay).

  16. Are there any stipends/subsidies or grants provided to the artists for the residency program?

    Artists are responsible for securing their own grants.

  17. Is there any support provided for visa or travel arrangements for international artists?

    No, you are responsible for all your travel arrangements.

  18. Is there a requirement for the artists to exhibit their work during or after the residency program?

    No, but we encourage interaction with the public. When the residents are in agreement, we have had open-houses where we invite the public.

  19. Can international artists apply for the Hammer and Sky Artist Residency program?

    Yes, the residency is open to applications from all over.

  20. How is the selection process for the residency program conducted?

    All applications are reviewed on a first come, first served basis and we look for a high level of dedication to your work.

  21. What’s the weather like on Brier Island?

    Expect variable maritime weather, that means any given day in the summer can have a broad mix of weather so plan to dress for lots of different weather. It’s always a good idea to bring a pair of rubber boots. The island is always cooler than the mainland by about 7 degrees in the summer and the winter usually varies between -5C and +5C. The nicest months are usually July, August and September.

  22. What activities can I do in my spare time?

    Brier Island is known for its great whale watching and bird watching (bring binoculars). It also has good hiking, bicycling, beach-combing, fishing and beautiful scenery.

  23. Where can I buy food?

    The local general stores are well stocked with basic groceries and limited fresh vegetables. If you need to do a more comprehensive shopping, you could go to Digby where there are all the big stores (Walmart, Dollarama, Canadian Tire, Home Hardware).

  24. Are there restaurants nearby?

    Yes, in Westport, there is a pub (Chetwicks, $$) next to the general store and a fancier restaurant (Grandview, $$$) at the Brier Island Lodge.

  25. How much are the two ferries to get to Brier Island?

    The ferries are free.

  26. Where can I get gas?

    The general store in Westport has a gas station and there is also a gas station at the general store in Tiverton.

  27. Where can I buy wine/beer/ spirits?

    At the general store in Westport.

  28. Can I charge my electric car on the island?

    Yes. If you have an adapter, we have a 220V exterior outlet.
